Summary of Google Developer group Ekiti State university 2014 events

Google Developer Ekiti State University began its existence on August 2014 and we has grown to be known by almost everyone (including students, administrative staffs, etc) in Ekiti State University and Ekit State at large. We have over 120 registered members (recent graduates and undergraduates) subscribed to our mailing list.

we held four events until the year end 2014. Below is a brief about the events:

  • GIS and Google technologies (Sept. 3rd 2014):
This is a training directed towards equipping the students of the department of Geography and planning science with skills necessary to stand toe-to-toe with other geographers in the world. Skills to learnt include: Google Earth and  applications, Google mapmaker, Sketch-ups (for 3-D modelling of buildings and structures); Programming in GIS/ Basic Introduction to programming (Python) .
The aim of this event was to encourage students to code and become members of the Developer Group.
We had a higher turn-out than expected (105+  participants wiht 20+ ladies).
  • Ekiti Android Study Jams (6th - 10th Oct. 2014)
An event hosted in partnership with GDG EKITI, was directed introducing new/ interested developers to Android App development and introduce the Android wear to existing developers.
We had 80+ participants (5 ladies); and the event ended with an hackathon were participants were grouped into 10 groups and each group produced an Android App.
  • Let's Hack EKSU - A polymer DevFest (28th Nov. 2014)
“(Let’s Hack EKSU” is planned to be a two-day event. Day One is Polymer design sprint event  scheduled to introduce participants to polymer and material design; while day two is scheduled to introduce participants to more Google APIs (especially the Google+, Google maps API, etc.) and how they can be used.

This event is directed towards exposing new and existing members of the above GDG to Google tools, technologies, APIs, and platforms; and encourage them to create amazing stuffs with them.
Participants: 101 (10 ladies)
Participants were distributed into to practicalise the hands-on code-lab handled.

  • GDG EKSU Developer Conference 2014 (15th Dec. 2014)
The was a zero budgeted event organized by GDG Ekiti State University as a means to help/ foster inter-personal development among members.
This event is directed towards to helping existing developers grow by providing them necessary mentoring, and providing necessary support, softwares and resources.
Also, to help the new developers jump-start programming and developing on the Google platform.
Participants: 49 (10 females)
